Is there a place for children during worship?

Children Are Always Welcome in Worship

At Good Shepherd, we joyfully welcome children as full participants in worship. We offer several thoughtful accommodations to help them feel engaged, supported, and truly part of our church family.

Children & Worship at Good Shepherd

1. Mattes Center for Sunday School & Youth

Our Mattes Center—originally Good Shepherd’s first sanctuary—is now a vibrant space for Sunday School and youth gatherings. Children come here for age-appropriate lessons, fun activities, and community before rejoining the congregation for the rest of worship.

2. Worshiping Together as a Family

We believe in the beauty of multi-generational worship. Families are encouraged to sit and worship together in the sanctuary. Our flexible spaces, including the Mattes Center and Gathering Area, make it easy for children and parents to feel comfortable and connected.

3. Engaging Children through Creativity

As part of the La Crosse Area Synod’s Engaging Children Initiative, we use creative approaches—like art, storytelling, and movement—to help kids experience and understand worship in meaningful ways.

What This Looks Like:

  • Sunday School Flow: Children begin in worship, and then head to the Mattes Center for age-based learning.
  • Family-Centered Worship: We encourage families to worship together so children can learn by participating and observing.
  • Sensory-Friendly Elements: Our programs are designed with creativity and accessibility in mind, especially for young or differently-abled children.

In Short

Yes! There’s absolutely a place for your child at Good Shepherd:

  • We offer a nurturing, engaging space for Sunday School and youth.
  • We encourage families to worship together, fostering spiritual growth across generations.
  • Our methods follow best practices for including and uplifting children in worship life.
